I have heard nothing from the DPI during this period of flooding and crisis in our state. I can remember that after the evacuation in 1997 I assumed someone would have a plan to deal with displaced k-12 students. There was no plan. There was nothing but a haphazard process that was managed by the Grand Forks system. In my role as the public information officer for both the city and FEMA during the recovery it was evident that there was no plan.
I guessed that the DPI would be tasked with designing a plan for future disasters that would address displacement and reconstruction issues for schools.
I know that nothing was done since after the Northwood tornado the DPI was no where to be seen.
Now with the flood they are once again no were to be seen. As a state agency they have a responsibility to be players in the disaster management....Before, during, and after....I am again disappointed that our State Supt. is not a player in this event.

Max,
Bismarck is prepared to receive up to 10,000 Fargo residents should the need (God forbid)arise. There are already plans to accomodate students and assimilate them, too, should they need to stay in Bismarck for an extended period of time. CHS, BHS, UMary, the Civic Center and BSC Armory would all be used to house these folks and the students would, where possible, be able to join classes already in session. As was the case with several students who came from GF in 1997, many will simply be enrolled as transfer students into our school system. One option would be to have Bismarck students (in the High Schools, at least) have extended days Monday through Wednesday and the Fargo kids would have school in our spaces Thursday through Saturday.
As far as I know, the DPI had no hand in developing these accomodations. The Red Cross will be the lead agency in handling the housing and feeding of our guests but the school districts will develop the plan for schooling the kids.
